The history of hemp may be the most remarkable of all plants. With this print, I aim to tell the story of cannabis, one of the most well-known yet controversial plants. Since the 20th century, cannabis has garnered a negative connotation for many, while in fact, it has been an important pillar in the development and progress of humanity.

This print highlights various facets of cannabis, such as its fascinating etymology and its numerous applications throughout history. The central figure is the Egyptian goddess Seshat, depicted with a cannabis leaf as a symbol of knowledge and science. Although cannabis originated in Tibet, the plant spread to China, India, and eventually the rest of the world, where it was used for clothing, paper, and medicinal purposes. In India, cannabis is associated with the god Shiva, while the Vedas describe the plant as a source of happiness and relief from anxiety. The Scythians used cannabis during their mourning rituals, and the word ‘Ganga,’ often associated with Jamaica, actually derives from the banks of the Ganges in India. Throughout the ages, cannabis has been used in various religions and rituals to draw closer to the divine, seek protection from evil, and assist in the grieving process.

De geschiedenis van hennep is misschien wel de meest indrukwekkende van alle planten. Met deze prent wil ik het verhaal van cannabis vertellen, één van de bekendste maar ook meest controversiële planten. Sinds de 20e eeuw heeft cannabis voor velen een negatieve connotatie gekregen, terwijl het eigenlijk een belangrijke pijler is geweest in de ontwikkeling en vooruitgang van de mensheid.

In deze prent komen verschillende facetten van cannabis naar voren, zoals de fascinerende etymologie en de vele toepassingen door de geschiedenis heen. De centrale figuur is de Egyptische godin Seshat, die wordt afgebeeld met een cannabisblad als symbool van kennis en wetenschap. Hoewel cannabis zijn oorsprong heeft in Tibet, verspreidde de plant zich naar China, India en uiteindelijk de rest van de wereld, waar het onder andere werd gebruikt voor kleding, papier en medicinale doeleinden. In India wordt cannabis geassocieerd met de god Shiva, terwijl de Veda's de plant omschrijven als een bron van geluk en verlichting. De Scythen gebruikten cannabis tijdens hun rouwrituelen, en het woord ‘Ganga,’ dat we vaak met Jamaica associëren, is eigenlijk afkomstig van de oevers van de Ganges in India. Door de eeuwen heen is cannabis in verschillende religies en rituelen gebruikt om dichter bij het goddelijke te komen, bescherming te zoeken tegen kwaad en bij te dragen aan het rouwproces.
